Mediumship – what is it?

WHAT IS MEDIUMSHIP AND WHAT IS A MEDIUM?

Medium, Psychic or Intuitive?

Mediumship by Sharon SimsMediumship Exploration:

I’d like to take a few moments to talk to you about Mediumship – what it is and the difference between intuition, psychic ability and mediumship and the different forms of mediumship.

Many of us here have experienced mediumship in some form or another, whether it be witnessing in spiritual church services, public demonstrations, having a reading with a medium or actually functioning as a medium yourself either on a personal, private level or even at a semi professional or professional level.

And so we all have a general understanding of what mediumship is and how it works – would you agree?

Good. I’d like to delve a little deeper into the understanding of mediumship if I may? But firstly I’d like to clear up a little confusion between intuition, psychic ability and mediumship. These terms are often used interchangeably and usually incorrectly.

It is my opinion and understanding, which has come from working with my abilities and constantly learning, investigating and experiencing for the last 30 odd years, that intuition, psychic ability and mediumship are intrinsically similar, but that they are indeed different things.

And I believe that it is important for the purity and integrity of the craft and profession that we expound and proclaim this knowledge, distinction and differentiation for the understanding and higher good of humanity and all who work for the service of Spirit.

It is also my belief that a Medium’s main role is to provide evidence of Life After Life. And I do say life after life as my work with spirit has certainly given me enough evidence to know that even though our physical bodies may cease to exist, our spirt, our soul is eternal. We also provide our client’s with healing, resolution and closure within their grief.

Now, moving on.

Intuition can be described as the innate, gut feeling, or first impression you may have about a person, place, or event. Intuition is a broader feeling that something is not quite right about a person or situation, which arises of its own accord. Your intuition is often ambiguous whereas your psychic impressions and mediumship messages are more detailed.

Your intuition will spontaneously arise when triggered, but your psychic skills and mediumship are usually activated by intention, conscious will or even subconscious triggers; (although these can also arise spontaneously in certain situations) and this enables you to receive more clarity and insight about people, places, things, and events.

Your intuition is centered around your instinctual gut feelings, while your psychic knowing relies on information gleaned through your psychic centers, the energy of people or places, the clairs and the collective unconscious. Your mediumship messages come directly from communion and communication with spirit but perceived through your Clair’s.

You may acknowledge your intuitive thoughts or feelings and then activate your psychic senses or mediumship connectivity to delve deeper and gain more insight and information.

It is believed that psychic or mediumistic information is more reliable, but also more powerful than intuition because your psychic or mediumistic assessment is more objective, balanced, and detached.

I would disagree though as I believe that all 3 are incredibly powerful and accurate when trusted and developed. It could be said though that intuition is more subjective whilst psychic and mediumship are usually more objective.

Now let’s make some further distinctions:

An intuitive is someone who predominantly works with their intuition or gut instinct.

A psychic uses their Clair senses to access information – clairvoyance (seeing) clairaudience(hearing) claircognisance (knowing) clairsentience (sensing or feeling) clairgustance (tasting) clairsalience (smelling) clairempathy (emotion) clairtangence (touch). And these can be subjective (internal or self) or objective (external) A psychic perceives energy and information from people, auras, objects, places etc and may work with past, present and future.

A medium or psychic medium is a person who uses both psychic ability and mediumship to “read” for you. And so, a medium receives information directly from Spirit, they will communicate and interface or blend with spirits in other dimensions. A Medium will usually work with information from spirit to assist you with the here and now and can access past present and future information directly from Spirit. That said, Spirit usually does not present the medium with future predictions or potentials unless it is for a specific need or higher purpose.

We have another class of mediums who may also work as channelers but that again is a another distinction and one I won’t spend a lot of time on right now . Suffice it to say that Traditionally, channelers are channeling messages from advanced spirits, usually to communicate spiritual wisdom about life and the afterlife (these spirits are not our deceased loved ones).

Communicating with your loved ones in spirit, is the role of mediumship.

It is important to note that All mediums ARE psychic but not all psychics are mediums!

It is my understanding that we all have our innate intuition that is often taken for granted. We also all have the ability and potential to be psychics, mediums or channelers just as we all have the ability and potential to be let’s say body builders.

We all have muscles – correct? And so with the right food and diet, the correct exercise and dedication we could have beautifully, strong, muscular built bodies. I don’t know about you but I have no desire to be a body builder.

It’s the same for becoming a psychic, or medium or channeler. With the correct diet of knowledge, development and dedication we could build these muscles as well. And although it requires as much work and dedication as body building it is definitely a potential I find much more desirable to build upon.

Ok now let’s look a little deeper into mediums and mediumship shall we?

I believe broadly that – A medium is any person who connects to, communicates with or channels an energy and brings that energy through to the physical plane. Whether they do it with words, oil painting or performance art is irrelevant – because many things can be channeled.

We all have the ability to work with our own Spirit Guides, Angels, and Loved Ones to receive guidance, insight, and wisdom if we choose to develop the ability – a medium has developed the ability to connect other people with their Spirit Guides, Angels, and Loved Ones, in addition to working with their own personal spiritual team.

I personally believe that pretty much everything is mediumship in some form. I believe that Spirit is ALWAYS trying to communicate with us in a plethora of ways but in our ignorance and lack of awareness we are not always connecting. So what do I mean by this?

Spirit will use Any means they can to speak to us and send us messages – not just through people specifically working mediumistically like Leonie and I will be this evening. Spirit will send messages and try to catch our attention through many people and using many methods. These messages can come from car number plates, lines in a song, passages in a book, dreams billboard slogans, tv commercials, repeated number patterns, repeated names, overheard conversations or discussions with a friend. The people involved in these conversations and discussions become incidental or even accidental mediums. They most likely are not aware that Spirit is working through them to reach us.

How many times have you heard someone say something and you’ve thought or said “oh that’s just what my mum would say, or you sound just like my nanna”. Make no mistake, that is your mum, your nanna, your dad, your husband, your sister etc trying to reach you. You yourself may often work as a medium without knowing it. You’ve probably seen thing, heard things, or been aware of things at home or work etc and said I know that was you dad, I feel you here Tess, thanks uncle John I know you did that? That is you mediumistically picking up on Spirit.

We pick up on Spirit communication or messages mediumistically, not psychically, although we can often pick up some information about a person in Spirit through our psychic senses however the messages are mediumistically garnered.

Now let’s go a little deeper still.

There are 4 to 5 forms of mediumship:

Mental, Physical, Channel, Healing And Trance (although trance mediumship is usually used as a form of physical or Channel mediumship and sometimes healing mediumship)

Mental mediumship is what you usually see on platform (such as in spiritual church) and private readings. This form of mediumship as we have previously discussed, is the reception and delivery of messages from Spirit (usually but not limited to deceased loved ones) in the form of the Clair’s we spoke of earlier. Messages are usually delivered through the speaking or writing.

Physical Mediumship is a form of mediumship that creates a physical phenomenon and can include table tipping, noise making such as taps, knocks or other noises, direct or indirect voice, levitation, apportation, materialisation and dematerialisation, movement of objects, physical touch, physical smell, temperature and energy manipulation, and the creation of ectoplasm or photoplasm with the help of a visiting Spirit or Spirit team. The physical medium or mediums, and the Spirit or spirits, work together to create and produce physical phenomenon. This form of mediumship is seeing a recent resurgence and development and gathering much interest and attention.

Channeling mediumship is much like Mental Mediumship, except that rather than connecting with many spirits, the medium connects with only one spirit or the same group of Spirits time and time again. Channel mediums allow their mouths and hands and sometimes bodies to be used to deliver messages through speaking and writing. Many feel they are allowing their body or voice to be taken over by the Spirit whom they are channeling and this is where channeling and trance mediumship converge.

While Channel mediums usually speak or or create in some form and are often able to still be upright, not movement restricted and able to be mobile due to a lighter level of trance or just inspired thought, a trance medium is usually seated and often movement restricted or movement reduced due to the deeper level of trance.

When spirit links with a medium, in trance and Channel mediumship, the spirit communicator exerts various degrees of control, or overshadows the consciousness of the medium to a greater or lesser degree. This varies, depending upon the intent and conditions of communication, as well as the ability of the medium to lend themselves to be overshadowed or controlled.

In this instance The Spirit communicator is speaking directly through the consciousness of the medium — rather than the medium relating what is being mentally given to him or her, as in mental mediumship and the voice pattern, inflection, and general manner of speech differ from that normally exhibited by the medium.

Trance is considered the strongest degree of control. Yet, even here, there are various degrees of trance control: from light trance to very deep trance. Deep trance is used primarily in physical mediumship. And a trance medium especially a physical trance medium will often have bodily/physical changes, overshadowing or transfiguration occur that represent the spirit communicator as well as the vocal changes.

A deep trance medium will usually exhibit:
A slowing of the heart rate.
A slow, deep, and steady breathing pattern.
No rapid eye movement, or REM.
A lowering of body temperature.
A greatly reduced reaction to touch and pain.
Various degrees of unconsciousness and not usually be able to remember what information was delivered to recipients.

Trance, channel or physical mediums will rarely channel the voice, or physical appearance or messages from our loved ones in Spirit, although as is universal want there may occasionally be an exception to this rule.

On a side note, one of my personal favorite trance channels or trance mediums was Edgar Cayce widely known as the sleeping prophet due to his deep level of trance.

The healing form of mediumship which I personally believe to be the purest form of mediumship is bringing or channeling the Divine Light Energy of Spirit through your body to heal yourself and others. This can be through what is commonly called ‘the laying on of hands’, but can also refer to forms of healing like Reiki and Shamanism. Again as previously mentioned trance healing mediumship can occur here as well and is a powerful and divine connection to experience or witness.

Of these types of mediumship, all mediums are sensitive to the presence of Spirit, though they may choose to connect more to Angels, Guides, Loved Ones, Earth Spirits or any other form of loving, light being or energy.
